Organising European Works Councils

European Works Councils are all about communication. For the EWC Secretariat, EWC Chair, EWC Select Committee or EWC decision maker a European Works Council is a multicultural platform with a number of challenges and opportunities.

Most EWCs are still struggling with communication challenges

Since the establishment of European Works Councils in the early nineties, many EWCs have reached cruising speed in terms of representation and exchange of information. Pending revised European directives on information and consultation, many if not most EWCs are still struggling with communication challenges during and in between their EWC meetings.

Language barrier

One of the most frequently reported issues is the language issue. A platform with representatives from different countries, cultures and differentiated levels of consultation is not an easy vehicle to manage. In this respect, the language barrier is often seen a major challenge in terms of communication, efficiency and last but not least cost budgeting.

A creative approach

A creative approach of constructive dialogue supported by an efficient language policy is an asset to foster cross-border consultation during EWC meetings, taking into account the cultural and political diversity of all EWC participants.
